SR99 and Pendale Avenue Interchange Photosimulations City of Modesto, Modesto, California POITRA Visual provided photo-realistic simulation services for the SR99 and Pendale Avenue Interchange reconstruction project. This innovative re-design Alternative greatly increased the volume of traffic that the interchange is able to accommodate. The design included intricate laneage layouts at the intersections of the interchange ramps and along the frontage roads. The project team chose to illustrate the alternative on a planner aerial image rotated to mimic an oblique aerial viewpoint. This type of image tends to appear slightly distorted but can satisfactorily accomplish the task when another aerial sometimes cannot be obtained on a tight schedule.

The Engineer provided the base photograph and layout plans for the entire interchange and local street system. POITRA transferred the design data to the photograph carefully adjusting for distortion. Using a planner aerial to mimic an oblique photo, though not preferable, can certainly work in a pinch. ” M.P, POITRA Visual Visual Simulations Project Manager Traditional digital painting techniques were used to adjust existing properties as needed to accommodate the new design. POITRA artists then added highway structures, interchange ramps, roadway widenings, retaining walls, pavement markings, traffic control, sidewalks, medians, and fill slopes. Many of the off system streets were also affected by design changes and needed to be reflected in the simulation. Great care was taken to ensure that the new lane markings were correctly represented and that they properly matched with existing roadways. The previous bridge and roadway design experience of the POITRA Visual principals played a key role in accurately interpreting the Engineer's design plans and efficiently transforming the information into an accurate illustration. The final aerial simulation was used as meeting materials for City of Modesto design and public involvement processes. The image played a prominent role in communicating the proposed design to project's public stakeholders.
