6th Ave and Federal Boulevard Interchange Photosimulations

CDOT, Denver, Colorado

POITRA Visual provided design visualization, graphic design support and public information website design and maintenance for the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT) I-25 Valley Highway Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The study looked at design alternatives to increase capacity and reduce congestion on I-25 in Denver between Broadway Boulevard Interchange and the Alameda Avenue Interchange.*

The configuration of the interchange at 6th Avenue and Federal Boulevard was included in the study because of its close proximity to the extreme north end of the project. The interchange configuation would effect the configuration of I-25. A practical solution for 6th and Federal had to be demonstrated.

Photo-simulation was the medium chosen as the best way to accurately communicate the proposed design to project stakeholders and to the public.

left quotation markThanks again for getting this done on such a tight schedule. As always these visuals comminicate the design much more quickly than plans.”

POITRA artists plotted the interchange lane configurations onto a stock aerial photograph from concept plans. Using traditional digital painting techniques POITRA added the interchange bridge structures, walls, ramps, proposed laneage, medians, sidewalks, and landscaping. Potential property takes and adjustments were also represented.

The previous bridge and roadway design experience of the POITRA Visual principals always plays a significant role in accurately interpreting and representing the Engineer's design.

The final aerial simulation images were used as meeting materials for CDOT's public involvement process.end of article
