Navy Drive over San Joaquin River Photosimulations

Port of Stockton, Stockton, California

The Navy Drive over San Joaquin River Bridge Replacement for the Port of Stockton included replacing an aging steel swing bridge truss to better accommodate increasing large truck traffic. The new concrete bridge also preserved river access for large load water traffic by utilizing a removable lightweight steel center span.

Photo-simulation was the medium chosen as the most realistic means of presenting the new design.

POITRA removed the existing truss bridge, its shadows and reflection in the Engineer provided existing photograph. A special effort was required to restore the background area of the photo where the truss and its reflection in the water had to be removed. Reflections of the proposed structure were added to complete the photo-realistic visual simulation of the new structure.

POITRA Visual also produced an aerial plan photosimulation illustrating the new route of Navy Drive.

POITRA created an accurate 3D computer model of the proposed three span bridge, abutments, and piers, and camera matched it to the perspective of the base photograph. The models were then appropriately lighted, rendered and composited with the base photo. The past bridge and highway design experience of the POITRA Visual principals made the transition from design plan to finished structure appearing in the visualization efficient and accurate.

The existing photograph used in this photosimulation was selected because it showed the proposed Navy Drive Bridge in relation to the existing truss bridge. POITRA also illustrated the bridge and the upgraded Navy Drive roadway link in a plan view aerial to show the proposed re-routing of Navy Drive to the new structure.

The final photosimulation images were used to present the design proposal to the Port of Stockton port authority.end of article
