Montini Recreation Trail Photosimulations

Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District, Sonoma County, California

Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space (SCAPOS) District secured an agreement to construct a five foot wide recreation trail through privately held land. This trail segment allowed an existing open space trail system to reach a proposed new trail head on district property.

POITRA Visual was selected to provide design visualizations for the SCAPOS District's negotiation process. Photo-simulation was be the best method of presentation to landowner and local governmental stakeholders.

The agreement called for the trail design to have as little view impact to the property as possible. The trail design avoided removing existing trees, used native seeding to re-vegitate cuts and fills necessitated by the trail and the trail surface was to be covered with native soil materials.

The District provided the photograph that was used as the basis for the design visualization effort. The photograph represented a view from the edge of the parking area of the proposed new tail head into the property.

POITRA modelers created a 3D terrain model from site contours and trail plans. The site model was matched to the base photograph to ensure the trail and its cuts and fills were correctly located. The positioning of the trail on the property was of paramount importance to the agreement.

The plan required a wire fence to parallel the trail in the flat area and replace the existing wood fence to prevent trail users from unknowingly accessing the private property. POITRA used traditional digital painting techniques to complete the simulation once the trail elements were located using the site model. Revisions restored the wood fence at the edge of the parking area and narrowed the trail on the hillside to three feet.

The finished visual simulation was used in meetings between Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District and the landowner.end of article
