Carrolton Corridor at Old Town Photosimulations

DART, Dallas, Texas

When the Dallas Rapid Transit Authority (DART) proposed to extend a Light Rail Transit (LRT) line along the Carlton Corridor, visually sensitive locales needed to be evaluated for view impacts. The Carrolton Line passes close to historic Old Town where clusters of revitalized antique structures house a vibrant shopping district. Design visualization was required to help describe potential visual impacts to concerned commercial stakeholders.

POITRA was chosen to provide the visualization services that would communicate the design to major stakeholders and the general public. Photo-simulation was deemed to be the best medium to present the new elevated line in context with the historic buildings. The simulation was created using both 3D modeling and traditional digital painting techniques.

POITRA developed a custom model Dallas Rapid Transit Authority LRT vehicle.

POITRA often creates custom transit vehicles at no cost to the project.

The Engineer supplied base photograph needed very little modification because the line ran along an existing street behind most of the Old Town buildings. This segment of the line was running on a pre-cast concrete viaduct.

Modelers at POITRA created a detailed technical model of DART's LRT vehicle directly from manufacturers specification sheets provided by DART. The model was given the DART standard paint scheme and markings.

POITRA created a 3D site model that included the proposed LRT viaducts and piers, LRT catenary system, and the POITRA model DART LRT vehicle. Past bridge design experience of POITRA principals made the building the viaduct structures a reletively easy process. The model was then camera matched, lighted, rendered and composited with the base photograph to produce the final simulation.

The finished simulation was used in meetings with the city, the public and other stakeholders and in project documents.end of article
