I-5 and Otto Drive West Photosimulations

CalTrans, Stockton, California

POITRA Visual provided photo-realistic simulations for the I-5 North Stockton Corridor, which studied the I-5 Corridor through Stockton, California to make capacity improvements. The project resulted in highway widenings throughout the I-5 corridor, several interchange redesigns, and two new interchanges.

The project added a new interchange at Otto Drive which would result in significant modifications to the roadway. Two alternatives were explored: an alternative that featured an above-grade profile for I-5, and an alternative that featured an at-grade profile for I-5 with a depressed profile for Otto drive. Photo-simulation was the medium chosen as the best way to accurately communicate the different impacts of each proposed design to the public.

POITRA constructed simple 3D models of the proposed interchange configurations, which were used to assist in determining the correct perspective for the alternative overpass structures and the roadway surfaces for Otto Drive. The models were camera matched to an existing photograph provided by the Engineer.

POITRA used traditional digital painting techniques to remove several residences and then add the overpass, soundwalls, interchange ramps, proposed laneage, sidewalks, medians, and landscaping. The 3D model helped guide the accurate location of each of these elements. The previous bridge and roadway design experience of the POITRA Visual principals played a key role in accurately interpreting the Engineer's design plans.

The final simulation images were used as meeting materials for the City of Stockton's public involvement process.end of article
