Carrolton Corridor Parkland Station Photosimulations

DART, Dallas, Texas

When the Dallas Rapid Transit Authority (DART) proposed to extend a Light Rail Transit (LRT) line along the Carlton Corridor, visually sensitive locales needed to be evaluated for view impacts. The elevated Carrolton Line passes the Parkland Mediacal Center on Harry Hines Boulevard. The medical center is an important activity hub on the corridor making it the prime location for a major aerial station. Design visualization was required to help describe the project and to evaluate potential visual impacts.

POITRA was chosen to provide the visualization services that would help perform these tasks for major stakeholders and the general public. Photo-simulation was deemed to be the best medium to present the new line in context with the surroundings. The Parkland simulation was created using both 3D modeling and traditional digital painting techniques.

POITRA developed a custom model Dallas Rapid Transit Authority LRT vehicle.

POITRA often creates custom transit vehicles at no cost to the project.

The Engineer supplied base photograph was modified by relocating existing traffic lights, street lighting and median curbs and gutters to make way for the station structure. This segment of the line and the aerial station would run on a viaduct.

POITRA created a 3D site model that included the proposed LRT pre-cast concrete viaducts and piers, stairs and elevators, station canopies, LRT catenary system.

Past bridge design experience of POITRA principals made the building the viaduct structures a reletively easy process. The model was then camera matched, lighted, rendered and composited with the base photograph to produce the final simulation.

Modelers at POITRA created a detailed technical model of DART's LRT vehicle directly from manufacturers specification sheets provided by DART. The model was given the DART standard paint scheme and markings. The station simulation was topped off wth the POITRA model DART LRT vehicle and station patrons.

POITRA graphic artists designed a display panel that included the existing conditons photograph and the proposed station photosimulation to be printed and mounted for use in the outreach effort.

The display panel was used in meetings with the city, the medical center, the public and other stakeholders. The simulation was also used in project documents.end of article
