Capitol Expressway PGE Tower Relocation Photosimulations

VTA, Santa Clara County, California.

The proposed Capitol Expressway Corridor is part of Santa Clara County Valley Transit Authority's (VTA) Light Rail Transit (LRT) transportation network. It consists of a median running double tracked mainline that includes two long rail viaducts, an elevated LRT station, several grade level LRT stations, a bus and LRT multi-modal facility all with-in a re-designed major arterial.

POITRA was contracted to illustrate various aspects of the design for stakeholders that included area residents, a power company (PGE), a water district, and many area businesses.

The design of Capitol Expressway's intermodal facility near Eastridge Mall displaced several large PGE electric transmission towers. The proposed location of the new towers was in close proximity to Santa Clara Valley Water District's (SCVWD) Thompson Creek maintenance road. POITRA provided a photo-simulation at the location to communicate the design proposal, compare alternatives and help facilitate negotiations with PGE and the water district.

The Engineer provided photograph was modified by POITRA to remove the old towers and wires using traditional digital painting techniques. The modified photograph was used as a base for 3D model renderings.

POITRA modelers created a detailed model of the proposed monopole design that would replace the older lattice towers. A 3D site model was created for each of two alternative layouts. The site model helped placed the new monopoles in the correct relationship to the roadway. The site models were camera matched, lighted, rendered and composited with the base photograph to complete a photo-realistic simulations.

The finished simulations were used in meetings between VTA, PGE and the water district.end of article
